イラクの「イスラム聖戦士グループ」が、日本人 3 人を拘束したことを最初に報じたのは、中東カタールのテレビ局アルジャジーラであった。目隠しをされて座らされた 3 人の映像は大きな衝撃を与えた。

　同テレビのニュースではさらに、局のウェブサイトに、日本からのメールが殺到していると報じている。

　日本の人々は我々の元へ、「人質を殺さないで」という、悲痛なメッセージを寄せている。

　彼らは、3 人がイラクにいるのは人道主義に基づくものであり、日本の軍隊のイラク派兵に強く反対していたことを指摘する。

　社民党党首の福島瑞穂は、ファックスの中で、「私たちはイラクとイラクの人々を愛している」と述べて、彼らの即時釈放を求めている。

　日本の NGO、パシフィック・アジア・リソース・センターのアピールは、「イラクからの撤退を我々の政府に説得するための時間をください」と訴えている。

　日本人からのメールには、次のようなことが記されている。

　「小泉首相らタカ派の身代わりとして、平和活動家が罰せられるのはなぜなのか」

　「3 人は戦士ではなくて、救援活動家だと放送してください。彼らを死なせるわけにはいかないのです」

　人質のひとりの母親は言っている。「イラクのお母さんたちは、子供を戦争で失う気持ちをもっともよく知っていると思います。イラクの人々も私たちの願いに耳を傾けてくれると思います」

　日本では、3 人の解放を求めて、直接イラクの人々、あるいは、「イスラム聖戦士グループ」に訴えるために、アルジャジーラにメールを送ろうという運動がはじまった。日本国家の頭を越えて、市民が市民へ、そして、市民が「聖戦士」へ訴える。そのためのメディアとして、アルジャジーラが選ばれたのである。

　当サイトに転送されてきたメールに、九州の O さんによる、アルジャジーラへの英文手紙が掲載されている。これをコピー & ペーストして、同局のサイトにあるメールアドレスへ送ることができる。O さんは、この手紙の内容について、次のように説明している。

（大体の意味は、

人質にしているグループに連絡を取る方法がないので、
アルジャジーラの番組やウエブに私たちのメッセージを載せてください。
日本の市民は三人の平和活動家の解放を求めます。
日本市民はこの人質事件に大きな衝撃を受けています。三人の人々はそれぞれ
イラクの人々のために活動してきた人たちです。三人を殺すことは逆に日本政府／
自衛隊に武力を行使させる状況を作り出すことになります。
三人を解放してください。日本の私たちも自衛隊を撤退させるために全力を尽
くします。

というような内容です）

Japanese Citizens call for the immediate release of the three peace activists.
Dear friends in Iraq,
The news that one of the anti- U.S. military groups has taken three
Japanese citizens as hostages has greatly shocked many of us here in
Japan, especially peace movement activists.
All of the Japanese hostages have been involved in activities to establish
a real peaceful society in Iraq. They themselves
are core persons who were against the depatching of Japanese Self-defence Forces to Iraq.
Ms.Takatou has collected donations for street children in Iraq and
translated Iraqi peoples messages into Japanese. Thanks to that we were
able to get to know your real feelings - that you want to make friends
with us Japanese but don't want military forces.
Mr. Imai is a member of the movement which aims at abolishing depleted uranium bombs.
Mr. Koriyama is a journarist who has tried hard to report the reality in Iraq to Japanese people.
They are all very precious people for both Iraq and Japan. Killing them won't
solve any problems but will just create greater confusion in Japanese
society and will give the Japanese government a good excuse to use their armed forces.
We, Japanese people, who have strong hopes for a real friendship with
Iraqi people, call for the immediate release of the three Japanese hostages.
We promise to do our utmost to ensure the withrawal of the Japanese Defence Force from your land.
Our Peoples in Solidarity for Peace.
